๐Ÿ”ง Windows install help

Installer failing? Here's what's going on and how to fix it.

๐ŸŽ Skip installation entirely โ€” use the portable version

Recommended. The portable ZIP runs without installation. Just unzip and double-click. No admin rights, no SmartScreen warnings, no antivirus issues. Same features, same updates.

โฌ‡ Download Windows Portable (114 MB)

Unzip โ†’ Open the folder โ†’ Double-click JGMusicTools.exe โ†’ Done.

๐Ÿ›กMicrosoft Defender SmartScreen blocked the installer

SmartScreen blocks unsigned EXEs by default. JG Music Tools isn't yet code-signed (the Authenticode cert is ~$300/year and I haven't bought it yet).

  1. Click "More info" on the blue SmartScreen dialog
  2. Click "Run anyway" โ€” this trusts the file for your account only
  3. Continue with installation

Or use the portable ZIP above โ€” SmartScreen doesn't block ZIPs.

โš ๏ธWindows Defender quarantined the installer

  1. Open Windows Security โ†’ Virus & threat protection โ†’ Protection history
  2. Find the JG Music Tools entry โ†’ Click "Actions" โ†’ "Allow on device"
  3. Re-download from JGMusicTools-Setup-v1.78.exe?v=1782284050
  4. Run again

๐Ÿšซ"This app can't run on your PC" error

Most likely an architecture mismatch. The installer is 64-bit.

  1. Check your Windows: Settings โ†’ System โ†’ About โ†’ "System type"
  2. If 32-bit: you can't run the 64-bit installer. Use the portable ZIP or contact me for a 32-bit build
  3. If 64-bit: try right-clicking โ†’ Properties โ†’ Unblock checkbox โ†’ OK โ†’ re-run

๐Ÿ“"Installation aborted" mid-install

  1. Close any running JGMusicTools.exe (Task Manager โ†’ End task)
  2. Right-click the installer โ†’ Run as administrator
  3. If still failing, install to a different folder (NOT Program Files): try C:\Tools\JGMusicTools

๐ŸŒDon't want to install anything? Use the PWA

Every feature works in your browser. Chrome and Edge let you install it like a real app โ€” no admin rights needed.

  1. Open /sheets/ in Chrome or Edge
  2. Click the install icon in the address bar (looks like a monitor with a down arrow)
  3. The PWA appears in Start Menu like any other app
About the code-signing certificate: Microsoft Authenticode certs cost ~$300/year and don't fully eliminate SmartScreen warnings until the cert has built reputation (3-6 months of legitimate downloads). The portable ZIP completely bypasses all of this. For most users it's actually the better experience.
